Welcome to Northern Lights Private School (NLPS)!

We have years of experience in the field of education where students were guided and led to success.

At NLPS, our shared goal is to nurture well-rounded students who are adaptable to the evolving demands of society. Our educational emphasis is 60% on academics and 40% on life as well as success skills. NLPS is committed to supporting both students and parents in navigating the challenges of modern education and the fast-paced, globalised world of today.

We serve as a one-stop centre for holistic student development, where learners acquire and practise essential life and success skills that they can apply at home, in the present, and in the future. Our daily training programmes place the highest priority on nurturing positive attitudes and achieving academic excellence.

Welcome to Sekolah Menengah Northern Lights (SMNL).

As Principal, I am proud to lead a community that embraces innovation, excellence, and a forward-looking vision. At SMNL, we prepare our students not only for tertiary education but also for the evolving world shaped by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and Artificial Intelligence (AI). While AI continues to transform industries and redefine careers, our mission is clear to nurture adaptable, confident learners ready for the future.

SMNL follows the national KSSM syllabus, enhanced with subjects such as finance, computer science, economics, and graph theory to ensure global relevance since 2017. Beyond academics, our students receive professional sports training under state- and nationally certified coaches from the Akademi Kejurulatihan Kebangsaan (AKK) and relevant sports associations, integrating strategy, motivation, and sports science.

Our co-curricular programs strengthen essential soft skills, resilience, confidence, teamwork, and leadership through participation in competitions at various levels which includes international exposure. Coach Chan Jie En
(Operational Manager)

Coach Chan Jie En is our Chief Adminstrator. She is a meticulous, responsible and dedicated leader of our professional team who manages both the front-end and back-end operations of NLPS. She interacts regularly with our existing and future parents by providing professional services that exceeds customer expectations.

Committed to providing the best platform for the educational success of our pupils as well as professional development of our team members, Coach Jie En tirelessly works with the Management and professional educators around us to explore for opportunity to continuously develop the finest educational framework that could unleash our pupils’ potential and further enhances our team synergy.

Coach Benny Ooi Chong Bian
(Head of Facilities)

Coach Benny Ooi Chong Bian is an energetic and passionate professional who enjoyed astounding success in teaching English Language to a wide spectrum of students from young learners to matured adults. He actively seeks to provide his pupils with a stimulating, engaging and creative learning environment that involves active listening, speaking, reading and even include acting.

From his vast experience, he is able to cater for and adapting his teaching approach to suit the differing needs of different groups of pupils. His previous exposure in multinational corporations had greatly enhanced his English Language competency in international business application that provides a more holistic and practical perspective which will immensely benefit our pupils in today’s borderless and dynamic world.

Coach Evelyn Wan Zi Shan
(Head of Discipline)

Coach Evelyn Wan Zi Shan is a passionate, diligent, and enthusiastic educator who has been serving in the education field since 2011. Graduating with First Class Honours in Education, she is deeply committed to instilling a love for the English language in her students while equipping them with essential communication and critical thinking skills.

Inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s quote, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seed you plant,” Coach Evelyn believes in the power of consistent guidance and meaningful mentorship. She remains steadfast in supporting and nurturing every child, understanding that growth takes time, patience, and dedication.

Beyond the classroom, Coach Evelyn serves as the Disciplinary Head, where she upholds school values and fosters a culture of respect, responsibility, and integrity among students. She also plays an active role in coaching NL Leaders and Class Leaders, guiding them to develop strong leadership qualities, confidence, and a sense of accountability as they represent the school community.

With a heart for education and a vision for holistic student development, Coach Evelyn looks forward to witnessing the students of NLPS shine and make a positive impact in every corner of the world.

Coach Kok Jen Dee
(Head of Student Affairs)

Coach Jen Dee is one of the emerging Student Affairs Coaches in NLPS, dedicated to building student leadership, character education and positive values-based development. With a Bachelor of Health Science (Hons) in Dietetics and professional certifications including Sports Science Level 1, Food Handling and International Sports Affairs Training, she integrates wellness, empowerment and experiential learning into youth development. She coaches Elite Leaders, and focuses on community outreach, sports-based growth and sustainability education. She is also a Malaysian Youth Sustainable Development Goals Agent, has represented Malaysia at the Singapore National Olympic Academy, and is a recipient of the Belia Juara Grant as well as a Nas Academy x GrabForGood Scholar — reinforcing her commitment to youth impact and national-level leadership.

Beyond school, she contributes as founder / volunteer of initiatives such as The Peer Movement, The PIF Project, Garden of Greenity, Ajar-Ajar Penang and Youth Climate Summit 2024. She also serves as moderator and speaker for major youth leadership platforms including the Malaysian National Olympic Academy, Malaysian Future Leaders School and TITAN Leadership Camp. Within NLPS, she coordinates field trips, seminars and co-curricular events, with her students achieving State-level recognition and event performance awards.

Coach Ong Hooi Thing
(Marketing Executive)

Coach Hooi Thing is a Marketing Executive at NLPS who also supports Student Affairs and academic operations. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nutrition, specializing in Sports Nutrition, and has over five years of experience with Penang State Sports Council (MSNPP), where she conducted nutrition consultations and assessments for athletes across multiple sports disciplines.

At NLPS, she plans, coordinates, and executes marketing campaigns, roadshows, and outreach initiatives to strengthen school visibility and community engagement. She supports the design and production of marketing materials and plays an active role in school events and open days.

In addition, she contributes to Student Affairs by overseeing trophies and awards for academic and co-curricular competitions, coordinating student activities and field trips, managing fee records, and assisting with graduation ceremonies, including decoration setup and vendor coordination.

Coach Seow Jia Man
(Head of Academic Department)

Coach Seow Jia Man, is one of NLPS pioneer coaches who first developed the language curriculum structure of the school especially Bahasa Melayu. As a Best Student Award Winner from Universiti Sains Malaysia, her passion for languages is beyond comparison where her expertise lies in translation of languages from one to another.

From her vast experience in learning about languages, she enjoys sharing with her pupils the various cultures with its languages and loves nurturing the understanding of it amongst them. With Coach Jia Man leading the Curriculum Development in NLPS, we are destined to build a curriculum structure that offers the best educational experience through a wide variety of interesting and fun programmes & activities for our pupils.

Coach Ong Xhing Yee
(Head of Co-Curriculum)

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” – Benjamin Franklin

Guided by this belief, Coach Ong transforms every lesson into a journey of discovery. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Science Education from the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) and over ten years of experience, she inspires pupils to try new things and spark their creativity through hands-on Science and programming activities. She actively organizes annual Science Fairs to cultivate curiosity and innovation among students. Her pupils have achieved notable success, including 2nd Runner-Up in an Astronomy Quiz Competition and awards in a Climate Change Essay Writing Competition. As a Scratch and Micro:bit Programming Coach, she bridges Science and technology, turning imagination into innovation.

Coach Joshua Ho
(Head of Sports
Department)

With a passion for education and sports, Coach Joshua inspires students both in the classroom and on the badminton court. As a Sejarah teacher, he brings history to life, helping students connect past events with values and lessons relevant today.

As a badminton coach and Head of the Sports Department, he mentors young athletes to develop discipline, teamwork, and resilience. He also collaborates with DuoSparks Badminton, coaching students and external candidates to nurture talent within and beyond the school.

He believes that true education develops both knowledge and character, empowering students to reach their fullest potential.

Coach Choo Shu Yee
(Administrator)

Coach Shu Yee serves as the School Administrator, bringing dedication and strong organisational skills to the daily operations of the school. She plays a key role in ensuring that administrative processes run smoothly and efficiently, supporting both staff and students in their day-to-day needs.

In her role, Coach Shu Yee oversees general administrative duties, manages finance-related matters, and handles student documentation. Her commitment and attention to detail contribute significantly to the smooth functioning and overall success of the school community.

Coach Jonathan Ho

Coach Jonathan Ho holds a Bachelor of Environmental Science (Hons) and brings his passion for learning and exploration into the classroom. With experience teaching both primary and secondary levels, he is known for his ability to engage and inspire learners of all abilities. He believes that education should go beyond textbooks, nurturing curiosity, creativity, and awareness of the environment in every student.

Specializing in Geography, Coach Jonathan actively contributes to green initiatives such as the Green School Team and Green Finger programs, while also serving as a school librarian. As a badminton coach, he promotes teamwork, discipline, and healthy living through sports. His teaching philosophy centers on guiding students to think critically, appreciate the world around them, and grow holistically through both academic and outdoor learning experiences.

Coach Loh Koon Ying

She is a dedicated and passionate educator who began her coaching journey in 2023. She teaches English and Mathematics to lower primary students, focusing on developing strong foundational skills through engaging and interactive lessons. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in English Education from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), where she was trained in language teaching methodology, practical classroom strategies, and educational technology integration.

Although her academic specialization is in English Education, she continuously enhances her pedagogical knowledge through professional development workshops, including “Game Changers: Learning Experiences That Make a Difference” by Dr Yeap Ban Har, which deepened her understanding of inquiry-based and effective mathematics instruction.

She prioritizes classroom management, cross-curricular integration, and project-based learning, creating a structured and supportive environment that encourages students to develop confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning. 

Coach Lim Wei Jie

Coach Wei Jie is a dedicated English Language educator with over a decade of experience in the field of education. He possesses strong expertise in linguistic proficiency and is also highly experienced in coaching SPM Pendidikan Moral, guiding students to achieve academic excellence in both subjects.

Committed to holistic education, Coach Wei Jie thoughtfully integrates real-life contexts and practical experiences into his lessons, making learning meaningful and relatable. His passion for teaching and his student-centred approach consistently motivate learners to strive for excellence and personal growth.

Coach Muniamah Subramaniam

Coach Munn is a dedicated Bahasa Malaysia educator with over 22 years of teaching experience since 2003. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Malay Literature from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a Diploma in Private Education (Pedagogy). With a major in Bahasa Melayu and Kesusasteraan Melayu, and a minor in History and Economics, she brings strong subject expertise and academic depth to her lessons.

Her teaching journey includes experience at both primary and secondary levels, and since 2019, at NLPS where she teaches Bahasa Melayu (Form 1–4) and History (Form 1–3). She has also contributed as a UEC examination paper marker and as a UEC question setter in 2018–2019, while continuously upgrading her professional knowledge through language standardisation courses. Coach Munn is passionate about nurturing students holistically, academically, emotionally, and socially. She is committed to inspiring confidence, cultivating a love for learning, and guiding students to realise their full potential while upholding strong moral values.

Coach Hilary Khoo
Ai Ling

Coach Hilary Khoo Ai Ling is an English Language enthusiast. A First Class Honours graduate who loves literature, particularly poetry, Coach Hilary is able to open her pupils up to enjoy a learning experience which is exciting and mysterious by varying her teaching methods to cater to different types of pupil. Her unique capability includes showing her pupils that there are worlds that exist beyond the classroom, where their lives can be expanded and enriched by the language they learnt when they learn with joy.

As quoted by William Butler Yeats “Education is not the filling of the pail, but the lighting of the fire”, she strongly believes in active learning, in which the classroom environment is dynamic and motivating for the pupils to strive for excellence.

Coach Harchana Nair

Coach Harchana Nair brings a strong academic foundation and a passion for holistic education to her role at NLPS. She holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). Her professional experience includes one year serving as a Chemistry Teacher at an international school, along with four years of dedicated service as a Science and Chemistry Coach at NLPS.

Throughout her teaching journey, Harchana has consistently strengthened students’ understanding of science and engineering concepts by encouraging and guiding them to participate in science-related competitions, including those at the national level. Through structured mentorship and hands-on learning approaches, she empowers students to think critically and innovatively, apply scientific principles effectively, and develop confidence in their academic abilities.

Beyond academics, Harchana is equally passionate about nurturing students’ artistic talents. As the Dance Coach of the school’s Dance Club, she mentors students in refining their technique, creativity, and stage presence. Under her guidance, students confidently showcase their talents at school functions and external events, reflecting her commitment to developing well-rounded individuals who excel both intellectually and artistically.

Coach Diana Gayathri A/P Valentine A.Dass

Coach Diana Gayathri is a dedicated and highly driven educationist with over 15 years of experience inspiring and nurturing young learners. Throughout her career, she has cultivated not only students’ academic skills but also their personal growth, serving as a mentor and motivator. She is passionate about instilling essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, active listening, discipline, and good manners, contributing to the development of well-rounded, holistic students.

Coach Diana holds a Diploma in Accounting Administration from University of Malaya (1999–2001), a Diploma in TESOL (Level 7, UK) (2017–2018), and a Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners (2021). Her qualifications and extensive experience enable her to create engaging, effective, and meaningful learning experiences for her students.

She feels privileged to be part of NLPS, committed to shaping the next generation of confident, capable, and compassionate leaders.

Coach Thaarani A/P Sivamoorthi

Coach Thaarani Sivamoorthi, a dedicated Science Coach, holds a Master of Science in Science Education from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Education (Instructional Technology Leadership) at the same university. With over four years of teaching experience across both local and international curricula, she has taught Science, Mathematics, and Sejarah under the UASA syllabus, as well as IGCSE Mathematics and English. Her experience also includes serving as an Assistant Lecturer in Microbiology at USM.

Passionate about fostering curiosity and independent learning, Coach Thaarani integrates creativity and technology to make learning engaging and impactful. Beyond academics, she is an accomplished classical dancer, having completed her Arangetram in 2019, and enjoys mentoring students in leadership, creativity, and cultural appreciation.

 

Coach Elisa Alice Piri
Anak David

Coach Elisa is a dedicated and passionate educator who believes that learning should be meaningful, enjoyable, and engaging. With a Bachelor of Mathematics with Economics (Hons) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, she has experience teaching primary students and guiding them to develop confidence, discipline, and curiosity in learning. She strives to make Mathematics a subject that students can understand and appreciate rather than fear, emphasizing creative methods and real-life applications to strengthen understanding.

Beyond academics, Coach Elisa is an active and versatile individual who promotes holistic student growth. Skilled in sports, especially netball, she encourages teamwork, sportsmanship, and perseverance among her students. She also integrates her talents in dance and singing to create fun, dynamic lessons that foster creativity and expression. Her philosophy is rooted in nurturing not only the mind but also the heart and spirit, helping every student reach their fullest potential both in and beyond the classroom.

Coach Husna Aida Bt Hasri

Husna Aida binti Hasri is a passionate and dedicated educator who believes that “every day in the classroom is an opportunity to build the future.” She teaches Bahasa Melayu and History at the primary level, combining academic instruction with the development of strong values and character in her students.

A Registered Counsellor under the Malaysian Board of Counsellors, Husna holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Counselling (Hons.) from Universiti Utara Malaysia and was honoured with the Vice Chancellor’s Gold Award (Selempang Emas) for her outstanding academic achievements. She firmly believes that true education goes beyond knowledge transfer, nurturing both the mind and the heart to develop well-rounded, compassionate individuals.

Her commitment to holistic student development ensures that learners not only excel academically but also grow in confidence, resilience, and ethical values, preparing them to thrive in all aspects of life.

 
 

Coach Tang Lih Chian

Coach Tang Lih Chian is a passionate, dedicated, caring as well as patient educator with vast knowledge in various fields of her wide interests. Apart from Chinese Language which she is notably passionate in, she also has a keen interest in making handicrafts amongst many others which demonstrate her all-roundedness.

Coach Tang is best in adaptive teaching where she aims to stimulate the interest of learning in pupils and grooming them to be creatively and technically driven in all critical aspects of life. Her attention to details and meticulousness are key attributes of success which she incorporates in all of her lessons and workshops.

Coach Tuan Anis Syazwani binti Tuan Azizi

Coach Anis Syazwani is a passionate educator in Business Studies and Moral Education. With a background in Accounting, she brings both analytical thinking and empathy into her classroom. Her lessons often go beyond textbooks, exploring current issues and real-world examples to help students connect moral values and business concepts to everyday life.

Believing that education should open minds and nurture hearts, Coach Anis encourages her students to think critically, act with integrity, and embrace lifelong learning. She strives to create a classroom environment that inspires curiosity, compassion, and awareness of the world around them.

As she often reminds her students, “True learning begins when we start asking why, not just what.”

Coach Chan Jie Ling

Coach Chan Jie Ling is always at her best while wearing two hats, both of an artist and an educator.  She has had a rich and varied teaching career in Art and has successfully established her very own art studio.

Coach Jie Ling is very active in our local art scene, participating in many art exhibitions and is currently the Secretary of Penang Oil Painting Society. As an educator, Coach Jie Ling is passionate on enlightening her pupils of the arts around them.

In her Arts Class, Coach Jie Ling creates a borderless environment for her pupils to enjoy arts and express their artistic expression freely which leads to discovery of their artistic self and capable of showcasing their natural talent through her fun-filled programs.

Coach Tor Jia Dong

Coach Tor Jia Dong is a goal-oriented and passionate educator with over three years of experience teaching secondary school Mathematics. Holding a degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance, he integrates real-world applications and financial insights into his lessons to make learning more relevant and engaging.

In his classes, Coach Tor emphasizes authentic, real-life examples that help students connect mathematical concepts to everyday contexts. He encourages learners to take ownership of their learning journey and actively involves them through diverse teaching strategies and interactive resources. His dynamic approach makes Mathematics practical, meaningful, and aligned with students’ interests and future goals.

Coach Mary Lee
Shun Yi

Coach Mary Lee Shun Yi has an innate passion when it comes to the educational needs of young children. Her extensive knowledge derives from her years of experience in early childhood education.

She has been very instrumental in assisting our young pupils transitioning comfortably from their preschool experience to the more challenging expectations of primary school.  Coach Mary strongly believes that fun learning is fundamental in a child’s educational progress and development.

As an educator, she upholds the principle that the most important criteria in the educational development of young pupils are patience, care and love.

Coach Fong Lim

Coach Fong Lim, an enthusiast in the Chinese Language, graduated in Masters of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from the Nanjing University, China.

Throughout her 20+ years of teaching experience in Mandarin at both the primary and secondary schools, she always focuses on drawing her pupils’ interest in discovering the beauty of the language.

Spending years of learning in China, she imparts to her pupils not only about the learning of the language but also the wonderful Chinese origin and culture. One of her passions and interests in the Chinese Language is the beauty of Calligraphy which she finds great obsession in, hence enjoys sharing with her pupils.

Coach Lim Thieng Thieng

Coach Lim Thieng Thieng is a patient, understanding and compassionate coach who takes great care as well as deep attention of her pupils. She believes that learning goes beyond the classroom and is a lifelong journey especially in Mathematics which must not be neglected regardless of a person’s learning ability. Coach Thieng Thieng does not believe in rote learning or memorising of formulas but rather designs unique ways to help her pupils on their understanding of key Mathematical concepts for a greater appreciation of the subject.

Apart from her passion in Mathematics she also possesses green fingers with natural keen interest in gardening. Her interesting knowledge sharing about plants with her pupils has spawn lots of interest amongst them to start their own gardening activities at home!
